Sully

(2016)

Today in 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 successfully ditched in the Hudson River near Midtown Manhattan.

Synopsis

Sully is a bio-drama that recounts the story of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (played by Tom Hanks), the pilot who heroically landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in January 2009 after both engines failed due to a bird strike. While hailed as a hero for saving all 155 passengers and crew on board, Sully faces an intense investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, which questions his decisions during the emergency. The film explores his inner turmoil, the scrutiny of his actions, and the resilience required to defend his instincts in the face of overwhelming pressure. Directed by Clint Eastwood, Sully is a gripping and emotional portrayal of an extraordinary event.

Why Today?

On January 15, 2009, the unplanned landing of US Airways Flight 1549 occurs. While much of the movie takes place after the ditching, this pivotal moment is obviously the key point of the movie.

Review

A movie about a 5-minute event and bureaucratic fact-finding mission has no business being this good. Overly dramatized, especially the NTSB portions? Absolutely. But it features yet another outstanding performance by Tom Hanks.

Maybe it’s (gestures wildly around) recent events, but there’s something beautiful about people confidently doing their jobs—from Captain Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles to the cabin crew and the ferry boat rescuers.

Similarly, Eastwood directs with steady competence. The cast is stacked and delivers excellent performances. Hanks, as always, thrives in roles like this.
