Today in 1812, Charles Dickens is born. Accordingly we choose an adaptation of one of his greatest works, Great Expectations.

Synopsis

Great Expectations is a British drama film, directed by David Lean. Young orphan Pip encounters the eerie Miss Havisham and her ward Estella. As Pip grows, he becomes a gentleman through the support of an anonymous benefactor, leading him to London society and a chance at winning Estella's heart. However, he soon discovers the truth about his benefactor and finds himself torn between his desires and his sense of duty. With its atmospheric settings and compelling characters, the film captures the essence of Charles Dickens' classic novel about love, ambition, and the pursuit of identity in Victorian England.

Why Today?

Charles Dickens was born February 7th, 1812. We could've chosen any number of his works that have been adapted to the big screen, but are choosing 1946's Great Expectations. The film is considered one of the most iconic and lasting works of British cinema, appearing in the top 5 of the British Film Institute's Top 100 list.
