Selena

(1997)

Today in 1995, Tejano music star Selena performed a record-breaking, sold-out concert at the Houston Astrodome.

Synopsis

Selena is a musical biopic that chronicles the rise of the beloved Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (played by Jennifer Lopez), from her humble beginnings in Texas to her unprecedented success as a Grammy-winning artist. The film highlights Selena's family dynamics, her struggles and triumphs in the music industry, and her enduring legacy as an icon of Latin music.

Why Today?

On February 26th, 1995, Selena performed a record-breaking, sold-out concert at the Houston Astrodome—her final televised concert before her death.

The concert is depicted in Selena, being shown as her "mainstream" breakthrough, on the verge of her crossover into the English/bilingual music market. Sadly, Selena would be shot and killed just a little over a month later, at the age of 23.

Selena falls into usual trappings of musical biopics, but the music is good and it features an electric breakout performance by Jennifer Lopez in the title role.
