Everything Everywhere All at Once

(2022)

Today is the Lunar New Year on the traditional Chinese calendar, so we choose a fairly recent movie that features a Lunar New Year celebration, along with a dive into the dynamics of a multi-generational Chinese-American family.

Synopsis

Everything Everywhere All at Once follows a middle-aged Chinese-American woman named Evelyn Wang (played by Michelle Yeoh) who is struggling with her identity and relationships. When she discovers a mysterious portal that allows her to access alternate versions of herself from different dimensions, she embarks on a surreal and chaotic journey to confront her past, reconcile with her family, and save the multiverse from impending destruction. As she navigates through various realities, Evelyn learns valuable lessons about love, forgiveness, and empathy.

Why Today?

February 10th, 2024, coincides with the New Year on the traditional Lunar/Lunisolar calendars of a number of East Asian cultures, including China, Taiwan, Korea, and Vietnam.

We're choosing a fairly recent entrant, the widely celebrated and acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once. A New Year's celebration is part of the film, and the film's themes of family and identity mesh nicely with the holiday's celebrations.
