Synopsis

Lincoln is a historical drama about Abraham Lincoln(played by Daniel Day-Lewis) and directed by Steven Spielberg. The film focuses on the last few months of Abraham Lincoln's life and his efforts to pass the Thirteenth Amendment, which would abolish slavery in the United States. Set during the Civil War in 1865, the film follows Lincoln's political maneuverings as he navigates the challenges of ending the war while simultaneously pushing through the legislation to permanently outlaw slavery. As Lincoln grapples with the moral implications of his decisions and faces opposition from within his own party, he demonstrates his political skill and unwavering determination to achieve his goal of emancipation.

Why Today?

On February 1st, 1865, Lincoln signed the joint resolution recently passed by the House of Representatives, sending what would become the 13th Amendment to the states for ratification. Although his signature was not constitutionally required, his approval was crucial for its passage. While the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment did not signify the complete end of slavery, as racial inequalities and injustices persisted long after its enactment, it is an important milestone in the abolitionist movement.

Lincoln depicts these efforts to pass the Thirteenth Amendment during the tumultuous final months of the American Civil War, led by an Academy-award winning performance by Daniel Day-Lewis.
