Full Metal Jacket

(1987)

Today in 1968, the month-long Battle of Huế began, marking a turning point in the Vietnam war.

Synopsis

Full Metal Jacket is a war film directed by Stanley Kubrick that explores the experiences of U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. Divided into two parts, the film first follows a group of Marine recruits through basic training. The second part focuses on the Marines' deployment to Vietnam, particularly the intense urban combat they face during the Battle of Huế. Through the eyes of the protagonist, Private/Sergeant Joker, the film delves into themes of dehumanization and the moral complexities of war.

Why Today?

On January 31st, 1968, the Battle of Huế began with a coordinated assault by North Vietnamese forces on the city of Huế, marking one of the bloodiest and most significant engagements of the Vietnam War. A major part of the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive, the Battle of Huế caught U.S. and South Vietnamese forces off guard, revealing significant intelligence failures. Despite ultimately repelling the North Vietnamese, the prolonged and intense urban combat led to high casualties and undermined public perception of the war effort back in the United States.

While Full Metal Jacket takes some liberties with the Battle of Huế, it captures the essence of the Vietnam War experience and the urban combat challenges that Huế presented, and highlights the psychological and human impacts of war.
