The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

(2001)

Today, in celebration of author J.R.R. Tolkien's birthday, we select 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring'.

Synopsis

In 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,' a young hobbit named Frodo embarks on a perilous journey to destroy a powerful ring. He's joined by a diverse group—the Fellowship—composed of wizards, elves, dwarves, and men. As they travel through Middle-earth, they face daunting challenges while pursued by dark forces eager to reclaim the ring for their malevolent master, Sauron.

Why Today?

J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3rd, 1892. In honor of his birthday, we select this film adaptation of his greatest work, producing one of the most notable, ambitious, and faithful film adaptations in cinema history. This movie also continues our early-year run of underdog stories, and is yet another classic that I always find time for early in each year.

Otherwise, January 3rd is generally a quiet day in the world of movies. There are few film-related events or significant references tied to this date in films—mostly passing mentions that don't contribute to the plot. At times in this series, we may focus on significant dates related to actors or directors. While today happens to be one of those dates, it doesn't diminish the greatness of one of cinema's finest trilogies and adaptations.
