Selma

(2014)

Today on MLK Day, we choose Selma to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and revisit the pivotal events leading to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

Synopsis

Selma is a historical drama directed by Ava DuVernay, depicting a pivotal chapter in the American Civil Rights Movement. The film chronicles the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders. Focused on the struggle for Black voting rights, the narrative explores the challenges faced by activists, the resistance from authorities, and the ultimate triumph with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Why Today?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on January 15th this year, coinciding with Dr. King's actual birthday. While there are many works that memorialize him, this year we choose to highlight Selma due to the pivotal marches that played a crucial role in the passage of the Voting Rights Act.
