2001: A Space Odyssey

(1968)

Today in 1992, HAL 9000 came online. In celebration of its 32nd birthday, we choose "2001: A Space Odyssey" as a tribute to the iconic artificial intelligence.

Synopsis

"2001: A Space Odyssey" is a science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick. Told in distinct parts, it begins with the Dawn of Man, depicting our earliest ancestors' cognitive leap facilitated by a mysterious Monolith. The narrative then shifts to the space age with a journey to Jupiter aboard a spacecraft with HAL 9000, an artificial intelligence that becomes a central source of conflict. As the mission progresses, astronaut Dave Bowman encounters another monolith, leading to a surreal and metaphysical journey through time and space.
